O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. She made it into the top 100 because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for the performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for bottom 3, and second lowest. The judges were shocked, and they advised that the public vote for Melissa who was the contestant with the most impressive singing abilities. O'Neil was never in the third place again following a series of consistently outstanding performance. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil beat Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil received a call shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
